Meet the Director of DRS
Steven R. Hill

Steve Hill was appointed the Director of the Department of Retirement Systems in February 2009. He is also the Administrator of the Washington State Health Care Authority (which he has led since May 2005), the agency that oversees health care plans for public employees and the state’s Basic Health program for low-income residents. His dual role in state government is part of a plan to improve customer satisfaction and streamline operations between DRS and HCA. Hill chairs the Public Employees Benefits Board, serves on the Washington State Investment Board, is a member of the Select Committee on Pension Policy and serves on the Governor’s Health Policy Team.
Hill was senior vice president of human resources for the Weyerhaeuser Company, president of the Health Care Purchasers of Puget Sound and served on the state’s Hospital Rate Setting Commission. He is a member of the first class of the American Leadership Forum Chapter for Tacoma-Pierce County and on the board of directors for Consumers Union, the Washington Public Affairs Network and the Puget Sound Health Alliance. In 1978 he was appointed a White House Fellow and served as a staff assistant in the Office of the Secretary, U.S. Department of Energy.
A former Regent for Washington State University, Hill received a Bachelor of Science degree in forest management from the University of California at Berkeley in 1969 and received an MBA degree from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1971.
