Eligibility Checklist

The checklist below presents a series of questions to help you determine the eligibility of your positions and personnel. As you respond to the questions, you will be directed to the next question. Do not evaluate substitute teachers for membership in TRS. You can restart the checklist at any time.

  •   Public School

Question: Is the person employed under a contract to teach?

  •   Yes
  •   No

Question: Does the person have either of the following?

  1. Valid certificate issued by the office of the superintendent of public instruction.
  2. Valid permit to teach issued by a lawful authority of Washington State.
  •   Yes
  •   No

Question: Is the person employed by a public school in an instructional, administrative or supervisory capacity?

  •   Yes
  •   No

Question: You have established that this person is “qualified to teach.” Was this person first employed by a TRS employer prior to October 1, 1977, or are they a former TRS Plan 1 member?

  •   Yes
  •   No

Question: Does the employee’s combined hours of service in all “contracted” work performed for the employer require at least five months of 70 or more hours of compensated employment per month within the school year?

You have completed evaluating all your TRS positions. If during this process you discovered that you have been reporting an employee in an ineligible position there are some steps you MUST take:

  1. Immediately stop reporting the employee in the ineligible position.
  2. Contact Employer Support Services to determine if corrections are necessary.
