The Department of Retirement Systems conducts one-on-one monthly interviews with our customers to make certain we're providing the information, tools and expertise they deserve. They tell us they want to be treated with respect, and that they need responsive service along with the right information tailored for their individual needs. At DRS, we're dedicated to meeting and exceeding these expectations every day.
DRS serves nearly 700,000 customers. They include fire fighters, teachers, government employees, and public safety and law enforcement officers. We exist solely to ensure our members receive the retirement benefits they earn while in public service.
Great leaders are those who create and support successful, high performing teams where people feel valued and appreciated for their contributions. We've taken the old pyramid structure where bosses played a major role at the top of an organization, and turned it on its head. By making customers the number one priority, our entire organization thrives.
Leaders here empower team members to do their best through coaching, mentoring, motivation and recognition. We foster an environment that promotes engagement, open communication, collaboration, and accountability.
We're committed to delivering culturally responsive services to our customers that reflect the diversity of the communities we serve. Through equal opportunity and affirmative action, our work environment is inclusive. All team members are treated with respect. They're valued and have the opportunity to contribute to their fullest potential. DRS is dedicated to recruitment, hiring, development, and retention strategies that will help us continue building a diverse, inclusive, and culturally competent workforce.
DRS cares about and supports our community. We pride ourselves on the many ways we give back to others. Whether we're wearing blue for autism awareness, going pink to support breast cancer awareness, or wearing red for women's heart health, we proudly display our support. Team members participate in fun runs, walks, and take part in fundraising efforts for many, many causes.
Since 1984, Washington state public employees and retirees have generously donated more than $89 million to charity through the Combined Fund Drive. CFD is the state's workplace giving program for active and retired public employees. DRS is first among medium-size agencies in giving, and this past October we surpassed our total donations from last year.
Our very own Adopt-a-Family committee provides assistance to local families and DRS team members, as well as non-profit organizations in our community. The committee is active during the holiday season and all year long.
