Rules vary by position for TRS Plan 1 members who are locally elected or appointed, or who are governor-appointed. Please contact DRS for more information.
If you are a retired SERS Plan 2 or Plan 3 member when elected or appointed to a school district or educational service district position, see the retiree section of SERS Rules for Local Officials.
If you were a former but not retired member of a DRS-administered retirement plan you may only join PERS Plan 2 or Plan 3. You are not eligible to rejoin any other system. See PERS Plan 2 and Plan 3 Rules for State Elected Officials.
If you have never been a member of any DRS-administered retirement system, you may be eligible to become a PERS Plan 2 or Plan 3 member. See PERS Plan 2 and Plan 3 Rules for State Elected Officials.
If you are elected or appointed to a local government or political subdivision position such as a county commissioner, city mayor, or city council member you are not eligible to remain in or rejoin your plan, but you are eligible to join PERS Plan 2 or Plan 3. See PERS Plan 2 and PERS Plan 3 Rules for Local Officials.
Note: This applies to all plans except LEOFF Plan 1, PERS Plan 1 and TRS Plan 1.
If you are appointed to office directly by the Governor you are not eligible to remain in or rejoin your plan, but you are eligible to join PERS Plan 2 or Plan 3. See PERS Plan 2 and PERS Plan 3 Rules for Governor Appointed Officials.
