New employees who first established SERS membership on or after July 1, 2007 and who have no prior PERS Plan 2 membership, have the option to become a member of SERS Plan 2 or Plan 3.
A new SERS member has 90 calendar days to make an irrevocable Plan Choice, or they are defaulted by the employer into SERS Plan 3, rate option A, investment program WSIB.
All employees should initially be reported in SERS Plan 2, unless the employer receives the completed Member Information Form (MIF) from an employee choosing SERS Plan 3 before the first payroll cutoff. If reporting for the first time, be sure to include the begin date, even if it is the same as the Plan Choice Date.
Note: SERS with prior PERS Plan 2 membership must be reported in SERS Plan 2. These members have no plan choice option, but are eligible for a January Transfer Option.
