Subject: DRS Notice 25-011, Return to Work exception extended

Retirees who return to work at a school district can continue to work through Jan. 1, 2030. This is because House Bill 1936 passed in the 2025 session. Retirees can work up to 1,040 hours and still receive their pension benefit.

School districts should continue to use these Type Codes through January 1, 2030:

• Type Code 93 is for reporting a SERS or TRS retiree hired into a non-administrative position.
• Type Code 94 is for reporting a TRS retiree hired into an administrative position at a second-class school district and retired prior to 1/1/22.

If the retiree has retired from more than one DRS-covered retirement system or has a disability retirement, they should contact DRS to discuss eligibility before accepting employment.
