Date: March 22, 2024
Applies to: School Districts
Subject: DRS Notice 24-006, Clarification of TRS Return to Work Rules and Type Code Changes

Effective Jan. 1, 2024, there are new Type Codes required for reporting certain retirees who have returned to work per legislation in effect March 23, 2022 — July 1, 2025.

Here are the changes:

  • New Type Code 93 is for reporting a retiree hired into a non-administrative position.
  • New Type Code 94 is for reporting a retiree hired into an administrative position at a second-class school district and retired prior to 1/1/22.
  • Type Code 97 is still used for reporting a T1 retiree hired into an administrative position at a first-class school district.
  • Type Code 98 is still used for reporting a TRS 2 or 3 retiree hired into an administrative position at a first-class school district.

Reporting an inaccurate type code may cause the hourly limit to be restricted to 867 hours when it could be 1,040 hours.

If the retiree has retired from more than one DRS-covered retirement system or has a disability retirement, they should contact DRS to discuss eligibility before accepting employment.
